The most invasive form of varicose veins treatment is removal of the damaged veins. The most common procedure is typically called ligation and stripping, though it does have a few other names as well. The procedure usually takes between an hour and an hour and a half. Two cuts are made, one in the groin and the other usually in the calf or ankle. A more conservative approach only goes to the knee. Additional methods of removal that are currently in use are PIN (perforation-invagination) stripping and ambulatory phlebotomy. PIN stripping involves inserting a special tool and sewing it to the vein. When it is pulled out, the vein comes with it. It can be performed under either general or local anesthesia. It is typically done in an operating room or outpatient center rather than a doctor's office. Ambulatory phlebotomy involves making fairly small incisions and inserting hooks into the vein to remove it. It is minimally invasive and usually only the incision sites are numbed.
